We are delighted to launch a one year theatre training course for children. This course will touch upon various aspects of theatre including script writing, relationship between body and space, dramatics, movement , voice training, musicality, set design, etc.
Designed and delivered by experienced and accomplished practitioners this theater program will end with a production and publication.
There are classes for two age groups : 6 yrs – 10 yrs & 11 yrs – 16 yrs

One Year Course, Once a Week Class

We look at theatre not just as an art, but as an approach to life. This training program could be helpful in facilitating holistic development of the participants. In the weekly classes, the children would be encouraged to speak up and participate in activities. They would be motivated to read, to look at and analyse material beyond their school curriculum. In other words, apart from equipping the children with basic acting skills, the workshop would strive to complement formal education with a carefully designed life skills training programme. The age range of participants has been deliberately kept wider than that in the typical classrooms for the sake of diversity, which is the key in inclusion and participation. We truly believe in learning together – so there are no ‘teachers’, there are ‘facilitators’ who create the environment of learning and, in the process, learn themselves.
About the Facilitators
She is a theatre consultant: trainer, playwright/director/performer, conducting workshops in schools and among various target groups. The first play she wrote, “Hariye Jete Nei Mana” was produced by Nandikar and staged at the Nandikar National Theatre Festival, 2009. Another play written by her, “Chharapatra”, produced by 4th Bell Theatres was staged at the same festival in 2015. Previously she has been a part of Nandikar (2005-11) and 4th Bell Theatres (Founder-Secretary/Member, 2010-16). The plays written and directed by her include Notun Path (2012), Naatok (2013), Spotlight (2015), Dil ki Duniya (2016) and others.
Her educational background also contributes to her storytelling endeavours. Debleena has completed MA, Comparative Literature (Jadavpur University) and MA, Applied and Participatory Theatre (Royal Holloway, University of London), both with distinction. She has undertaken the following Practice-Research projects, both of which have storytelling practices at their core:
“Storytelling with Children and Young Adults in Kolkata: Possibilities for the Emergence of Cross-Socio-Cultural Aesthetics”, under the supervision of Dr. Emma Cox; coordinated workshops at Heritage Engineering College, Kolkata; Notun Path School, Kolkata and Barisha Uchha Balika Bidyalay, Kolkata , 2015
“Slough Stories”, under the supervision of Prof. Helen Nicholson, in association with the Slough Libraries, 2015.
Jeet Sundor Chakroborty
Jeet Sundor Chakroborti is a thespian, film actor & light designer. He has been a part of several theatrical productions, short and long feature films.
Jeet’s tryst with theatre started in his teenage years. He received his training from prominent theatre personalities including Rudraprasad Sengupta, Kaushik Chatterjee, Arun Mukhopadhyay & Abani Biswas.
He has been working on a training methodology which is based on the the European physical theatre methods as proposed by Jerzy Growtowski. He has also been deeply impacted by Badal Sircar and his approach towards theatre design keeping in mind the Indian realities to create a new experience for the audience.
He is now an accomplished theatre workshop leader and regularly conducts workshops with adults & children.
Jeet believes in the enormous transformational power of theatre practice. He believes that theatre helps one connect and stay connected with his/her roots, which aids in personal and social transformation. Jeet is also deeply entrenched into the application of theatre in education. He has worked with several group of children and enjoys the interaction with them.
Debashree is a storyteller, theatre coach and a dance movement therapist. She has completed her PG Diploma from Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Dance Movement Therapy. Debashree is actively involved in the initiative to promote alternative education and holistic development of children.
She has led projects involving children and arts in schools and communities. Notably she has led the UN project called ‘Adolescent Friendly City’, in 5 municipal wards of Kolkata, is engaged as the theatre coach at Asian International School and a holistic development coach at All Bengal Women’s Union. She is also the associate team leader of Masterpeace Kolkata.
Debashree continuously develops her practice in theater and has attended several workshops by international and national masters. She believes in the power of theatre to deal with trauma and stress and transform the way a person starts perceiving the the world, developing a positive perspective.
Bibas Mukherjee has the privilege of starting his journey in theater with the iconic theatre group Shatabdi under the tutelage of Badal Sircar. He is a junior fellow with the Ministry of Culture, India. His has continued his journey in theatre research and has worked with several Indian and international theatre and performing artists like Tridip Ghosh Rhizome Lee, Syv Bruzeau, Janardan Ghosh, Jean Jacques Lemetre, Tapasi Roychoudhury, Surjit Nongmeikapam, Soti RPD & others.
Bibhas believes in the power of theatre to develop deep consciousness of the self and bring about a harmonious relationship with the world, creating a dialogue between different positions.
He has led several workshops and worked extensively with children.

Janardan Ghosh is an actor & theatre director, storyteller and a playwright from Kolkata, who has been experimenting with both forms and themes in his performances. Indeed much of the past work has explored the themes of spirituality, myth, gender, sexuality and society. he is currently completing his doctorate in ´Performance and Shri Ramakrishna from the Ramakrishna Mission University. Janardan Ghosh has trained and worked with several international and national theatre and film directors and is a critically acclaimed theatre practitioner in contemporary Bengal. He has worked with major international directors ad performed, taught at various places in India & abroad.
Pradip Chattopadhyay is musician, performer & a sound artist. He has been the founding member of Ḿohiner Ghoraguli´ which has been an iconic rock band in Bengal. An civil engineer by training, he has traveled the world to perform and work. He is a prolific performer and is passionate about his experiments & research in sound and performance.
Saikat Surai is a Crossmedia practitioner based in Kolkata, whose work stretches across videos, installations, print-making, animation and painting. He is also a relentless designer who has designed major architectural projects, namely the Kolkata Movietone Studios, Kolkata, among other things.
A spoken word performer, independent media analyst, curator and a performance consultant by profession, Mr Parnab Mukherjee is one of the leading alternative theatre directors of the Indian sub-continent. Parnab is the knowledge mentor for the top schools in India.
A performance text writer and charismatic performer, he has diverse experience in non-proscenium, verbatim, site-specific and physical theatre.
Parnab is multilingual & a prolific traveler. He is a subject expert on intersection between South Asian cultural traditions and its re-shaped urban practice, sharing the same in various institutions across the world.
The facilitators will be assisted by various other theatre practitioners and movement artists.
