Dhrupad is the oldest surviving form of pre-modern sound practices in India, having its origin in the chanting of vedic hymns and mantras. Though a highly developed musical form with a complex and elaborate grammar and aesthetics, it is primarily a form of sonic meditation and worship, in which offerings are made to the divine through sound or nada. One of the foremost exponents and theorists of Dhrupad, Ashish Sankrityayan presents his new book Dhrupad of the Dagars: Conceptual Foundations and Contemporary Questions that deals with the history of the tradition of the Dagars, one of the leading schools of Dhrupad, and the conceptual foundations of their art in the overall context of Indian music. The presentation is illustrated by an elaborate listening session, in which Sankrityayan presents many recorded examples from his personal collection.
