Electromagnetic Rituals by Sajjra Xhrs Galarreta

Since 2006, Sajjra has been researching the artificial electromagnetic emissions, their impact on our society and their qualities as material to produce audiovisual experiences and content. As a result of this research he has developed performances, sound walks and publications such as: “Invisible Sonic Debris and Continuity” (2007), “Computer Music is Dead” (2009), “Magnetism: Attraction and Repulsion” (2009), “HiperOido” (2013), “Amplified Hearing & Electrosmog” (2014), and “Electromagnetic & Acoustic Detritus” (2016), among others.

“Electromagnetic Rituals” is a new project that consists of recycling the invisible waves of the electrosmog (electromagnetic fields) and the tangible devices that emit them to produce  public erformance1 that explores the enhancement of acousmatic and psychoacoustic effects through interaction with the audience.

“When we accept the needs generated by technological progress and its commercialization, we are reaffirming our mutant condition as urban beings. We live surrounded by imperceptible electromagnetic fields coming from our communication technologies. We accept them as something normal in our daily life, despite the consequences they generate in our physiology. This electrosmog is the pollution of our modern societies. The recycling of this invisible waste to induce artistic performances refers to the physiological self-destruction and dependence that technological production and human creativity intrinsically entail.” (Sajjra Xhrs Galarreta, Documenta 14, Kassel, 2017).
