Approaches to Food Security and Sovereignty in the Global South

In this COOLtalk we will be tuning in to and interacting with experts who have worked practically with the issue of food security an sovereignty in Kenya and India as well as in other parts of the world.

COOLtalks are part of Masterpeace COOLeaders global program which aims to build ownership and leadership at grass roots level to address the issues of environment – natural, developmental and cultural. We hope to reach out to common people and engage, inform and motivate them to take practical steps to solve key issues and to transform the conditions which lead to the crisis. The program is committed to tackling climate action, toxicity in our lives and enabling equal participation of women and marginalized communities.

The COOLeaders program is using creative modes likes arts, films,sports, etc towards its purposes.

About the speakers

Samson Kiiru Ngugi

Samson Kiiru Ngugi, Born in Nakuru (Kenya) on 21/9/86, lives in Nakuru Kenya Graduated at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo (Cn, Italy) in 2014, he started working on ‘Slow Food gardens project’ in 2012 as a trainee at the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity, Continued collaboration on the Ark of taste and the Slow Food gardens in Africa projects for what concerns the English speaking African countries and since 2014 till to date he has been working with Slow Food Kenya, Coordinating Slow Food Kenya activities; Slow Food gardens in Africa, Ark of taste, Slow Food Cook’s Alliance, Earth Markets and Slow Food Youth Network Kenya in Kenya. He is also Steering Committee member of Slow Food Youth Network Global and a trained multiplier of Knowledge Centre for Organic Agriculture (KCOA) in Eastern Africa. Since November 2023, he is the Ambassador of University of Gastronomic Sciences in Kenya and Member of Slow Food International Board of Arbitrators

Kirti Mishra

Kirti Mishra is the Cofounder of Ecociate Consultants, a leading research and consulting organization offering cutting edge research and consulting services in the domain of sustainable agriculture and food systems. Ecociate consultants of which Kirti is a cofounder, has significant experience of working with Base of the pyramid (BoP) communities and development sector organizations in designing and delivering customised sustainable solutions. 

With more than 25 years of experience, Kirti carries unique expertise in strategizing and designing sustainable and inclusive business solutions targeted at the low-income communities. He has been supporting several organizations which are working in themes like agroecology, regenerative agriculture, sustainable sourcing and marketing of safe and healthy food. He has been supporting reputed organizations like FAO, UNESCAP, GIZ, World Bank, GAIN, IDH Trade, Solidaridad, SwissAid, Swisscontact, the Nature Conservancy etc. He has been working extensively with GIZ, India towards strategizing its food systems related initiatives.

Kirti is spearheading the action learning initiative of Ecociate called Earthy n Green. The driving purpose of this initiative is to establish a sustainable food system business model by linking farmer based enterprises engaged in producing safe and healthy products directly with the consumers. 

Murigi Apollo

Murigi Apollo is a Kenyan skilled social innovator whose work has supported multiple humanitarian projects enriching thousands of livelihoods in several African countries. He is the Country Coordinator for MastePeace Kenya, a nonprofit that mobilizes and inspires youth and women and youth in conflict areas to engage in dialogue and gain new perspectives for a peaceful world. He is a graduate student pursuing an MA in International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid and holds a BA in International Relations and Diplomacy. He is a member of the International Youth Alliance in Family Planning, a volunteer at the Africa Cancer Foundation; and Young Achievers Network and is the patron of M-Spot, an online platform that seeks to engage men and boys as champions of actions against Violence targeting Women and Girls in informal settlements.
