Alliance francaise du Bengale , BaBa Lo-Fi band & Culture Monks present ‘BaBa lo – fi band’ – a session of avant- garde music at Alliance francaise du Bengale,Park Street on June 15, 2018 from 7 pm.

The session will feature musical improvisation which will cut across multiple genres by 6 talented and accomplished musicians with immense experience and a never dying passion for experimentation.

The musicians are as follows :

Baba Lofi a.k.a Rit Chatterjee

is versatile guitarist currently based in Kolkata and comes from a family of musicians. As a child he trained in Western Classical guitar from the Trinity College London under the tutelage of Shri Syamol Dey. He also trained in Indian classical music under Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya. He has been greatly influenced by the music of Jimi Hendrix, Steve Vai, Megadeth, Dream Theater, Pat Matheney, Bob Marley etc. He is deeply influenced by baul/fakir music and the music of his father, uncle and cousins. Over the years he has developed a style that is essentially his own.

He also plays the bass guitar, Dotara, balaika. He was the guitarist for the rock-jazz-funk music outfit Gunzooloo and reggae-funk band RIddim Funktion. They performed at various venues around Kolkata, Bombay, Goa and Nepal. As Baba Lofi he has performed at in many concerts in St. Petersburg, Russia.

is the unique merger of technology and music following the synthesizer music tradition. A one man live act, the drum machine and 303 driven rhythms created by Varun Desai throb beneath improvised analog synthwork and digital atmospheres reminiscent of classic Techno, Ambient, Krautrock and Berlin school synthesists.

With a 15 year career as a promoter, label manager, producer, designer & video artist, Varun Desai’s culture work has taken him from Burning Man to Berghain, and as a DJ to tour Poland, Switzerland, Portugal, Nepal and India. Producing concerts for Jazz legends and pioneering underground club culture in his hometown of Calcutta, his sound draws its identity from dance music while his performance pays its dues to those who step onstage to create a live experience.

Gaurab Chatterjee

is a drummer and a composer based out of Kolkata ,India.

he has been associated with the Kolkata based rock band Lakkhichhara since it’s inception having released 5 studio albums with the band meghmallar(2001), Jibon Chaichhe Aro Beshi(2003),Eka(2005),Bishesh Bishesh Angsho Birotir Por(2009) and Kemon Achho Shohor(2012).Lakkhichhara is a very popular band in Eastern India having performed all over the country and abroad as well. Lakkhichhara has been featured in a number of National and International television channels. They are the first vernacular Rock Band from Kolkata whose video got featured in Channel V Asia.

Gaurab has been associated with the critically acclaimed alt jazz fusion line up Kendraka since 2012. Gaurab has been a part of the Live Album “Live At No Black Tie”. Gaurab has toured all over the country with Kendraka as well as in Malaysia,Japan,Nepal,Bangladesh,Germany and Switzerland. Having played in jazz clubs like “Bird’s Eye Jazz Club”(Basel) and “No Black Tie” (Kuala Lumpur)

He is a part of two Indo-Australian fusion/Avantgarde projects “Hatchlings” and “The Three Seas”. The Hatchlings have recorded their first album In Melbourne and it is awaiting release. The Three Seas have released their first album “Haveli” in 2014 and are about to release their second album later this year.

Pradip Chatterjee (Bulada)

is the founder member of Culture Monks. he is well known as the founder member of the iconic Bengali rock band Mohiner Ghoraguli. He plays the flute and air instruments, is a sound artist and a performer. With immense experience in performing in spaces around the world is always passionate about experimenting and evolving the concept of music.

Kaushik Modak

is a young and talented musician and a tattoo artist who is currently experimenting with the Didgerido.
